The checklist for comparing balcony safety quotations fairly

If two quotes cannot be lined up line by line, you are not comparing price — you are comparing storytelling.

Lines that must appear in writing

A usable quotation names each opening, the system for that opening, material grade, spacing or mesh size, fixing method, access assumptions, inclusions such as debris clearance, and warranty terms. Soft phrases like 'best quality' or 'standard fitting' are not specifications.

Ask for the unit of measurement used — per opening, per square foot of mesh, or per running metre of rail — and whether scaffolding or high-floor access is included or extra.

Red flags when you compare vendors

A much lower price with no grade, no spacing and no access note usually means those costs will appear later or the installation will be under-specified. Another red flag is refusing a short survey before a 'final' number. Measured work cannot be finalised from a phone photo alone when anchors and returns are invisible.

  • Measured openings listed individually
  • Material grade and spacing stated for each system
  • Access, scaffolding and society constraints noted
  • Warranty scope and exclusions written clearly

Bring the same checklist to every vendor. The honest quote is the one that answers every line, not the one with the lowest total.

How we structure Avensafe quotations

After survey we itemise openings, confirm grade and spacing in writing, and separate optional upgrades such as coastal hardware or removable duct panels. You can decline a line without the whole quote collapsing into vagueness.

If you already have a competing quote, share it with the numbers and we will map it onto this checklist so you can see what is missing rather than simply matching a total.

Why do quotations for the same balcony differ so much?

Almost always because the specifications are different, even when the dimensions are identical. Cable grade, cable spacing, net polymer and the type of anchor used all change the cost substantially and none of them are visible in a photograph. When comparing quotations, check the stated grade and spacing rather than the total alone.

Can you publish a rate per square foot?

We deliberately do not, because a single rate would be misleading. The same area costs very different amounts depending on the grade of hardware, the spacing you need, the height you are working at and the condition of the substrate. Our pricing guide sets out every factor that moves the number so you can see how a quotation is built up.

Do you need to visit before giving a price?

For anything structural we do, yes. We can give an indicative range over the phone from your balcony dimensions, but the final price depends on the condition of the wall or slab we are fixing into, the access route for materials, and the exact spacing you need. A survey takes about twenty minutes and means the quotation we give you is the price you pay.

We measure every bay, check what we are fixing into, and quote the grade and spacing in writing. No rate per square foot, because it would be wrong for most properties.
