How child-safe balcony spacing is actually decided
Tight spacing alone is not a child-safety plan. The opening geometry and how kids use the space matter as much as the pitch.

Spacing is only one part of the barrier
Parents usually ask for the tightest cable pitch available, which is understandable. On site, spacing is one input among several. Rail height, side returns to the wall, furniture that creates climbing steps, and whether the balcony is used as a play area all change what a safe barrier looks like.
That is why we measure the full opening and walk the balcony with you before locking a specification. Two identical-looking flats on different floors can need different returns and fixing patterns even when the cable pitch looks the same on paper.
What we check before recommending a pitch
We look at climbable edges first. A planter ledge, AC outdoor unit, or low furniture against the rail can defeat a tight pitch if a child can step up. Side gaps next to the wall are another common miss: a neat front face with an open return is not a finished job.
For nets, mesh size and border rope tension matter together. A fine mesh that hangs loose still creates a pocket a child can lean into. For invisible grills, vertical cable pitch must be consistent from end to end, including corners where frames turn.
- Measure rail height and every side return to the wall
- Note climbable ledges, planters and outdoor units
- Confirm whether pets will share the same opening
- Write spacing and fixing method on the quotation, not only the product name
Ask any vendor to state cable pitch or mesh size in writing for your measured openings. A verbal 'child safe' label is not a specification.
What changes after installation
A child-safe installation still needs occasional checks. Furniture moved against the rail, new planters, or a loose turnbuckle can change the risk profile months later. We recommend a press-test of cables or mesh after the first monsoon and whenever the balcony layout changes.
If you are comparing invisible grills and nets for the same balcony, bring photos of how the space is used day to day. Visibility, airflow and play patterns usually decide the system faster than price alone.

What cable spacing is right for a home with young children?
The spacing has to be tight enough that a child cannot pass a head or limb through, and close enough that the cables cannot be used as a ladder. Vertical cables are better than horizontal ones for exactly that reason. We gauge the gap at several heights on every bay at handover rather than assuming the fabrication came out to specification.
Can one net keep birds out and also stop a fall?
No, and treating them as interchangeable is the most common mistake we are called to correct. A light bird-exclusion mesh will not arrest a person or a heavy object. Where there is a genuine fall risk we specify a rated net with rated anchorage, which is a different product at a different price.
Do you need to visit before giving a price?
For anything structural we do, yes. We can give an indicative range over the phone from your balcony dimensions, but the final price depends on the condition of the wall or slab we are fixing into, the access route for materials, and the exact spacing you need. A survey takes about twenty minutes and means the quotation we give you is the price you pay.
